Learning to Lead Yourself in Trading

Leading Yourself in TradingReading this now, some of you must be wondering what I’m about to share today. While this trading site has its unusual taste of human development and technical insights, I think today’s article will be another interesting one.

Learning to lead yourself is more than just learning or leading, because it is about YOURSELF first. This is an area where many traders do not explore. Even if they do, there isn’t much depth in their exploration. Hence, more often than not, traders jump into the conclusion that they lack X, they need Y or they are searching for Z before their trading can improve.

Right? If not, ask yourself, are you one of them?

Just to be clear, I’m not saying that these traders are right or wrong. All I’m suggesting here is that, without first learning about yourself, you usually end up going in circles. In fact, it is only when you understand yourself that the learning begins. Without a good understanding of yourself, it is difficult to grow. As Watts S. Humphrey says it:

If you don’t know where you are, a map will not help

Emptying Your Space

We begin to learn about ourselves by first emptying the space in front of us. Well, some of you will ask, “what does that mean?”

If you’re curious, let’s start with this idea.

Everyone has a space within and around them. However, many traders (especially new traders) are so eager to get going that they often get ahead of themselves. In the end, they fill up the space so quickly and they fail to navigate themselves properly. As mentioned in the past that we should Learn to Unclog our Trading Mind regularly so that we can breath again and to feel refresh about what we’re doing.

Trust me, in the last few months of being away, I can see my personal space being cleared and my goals as trader and entrepreneur redefined. I believe you too can benefit from the space and I encourage your to do so.

Taking one step back, I guess the question you would be asking is this:

How do I know if I need space?

creating trading spaceIn all honesty, if you are not taking time out once every 3-6 months, that is, by default, unhealthy. Of course, that is just a simple rule of thumb and may not apply to everyone. Hence, the other way to gauge whether you need space is to ask yourself the following:

  • Are you trading (whichever instrument you’re trading) because this is the only instrument you have?
  • Do you feel that you have limited choices in trading (or in your general living conditions)?
  • Do you feel that you are forced to do things that you do not enjoy?
  • Do you feel like you are suffocating (metaphorically)?

If your answer is ‘Yes’ to any of the above, then it is likely that you need to empty your space.

Another quick gauge is that the feeling that you have (irrespective of your condition of the above) should be the feeling of hopefulness and being positive about life and trading.

Learning About Yourself

Today, we are going to cover the most important area that you need to learn about yourself.

In case you don’t already realise, knowing yourself is more important than knowing the market. We begin by asking this

Where are you NOW?

And where are you GOING?

And when you have the answers to the above, ask yourself:

WHY?

salesratraceStart with these simple questions, and if you have time now, please take out a piece of paper to write down the answers. If anything, please do not pick an answer the questions for the sack of answering the questions. If you truly want to learn about yourself, then do take time out to think about it seriously.

You see, these are the most basic question that every human and trader should know. However, more often than not, retail traders get so bogged down in the rat race created by society that traders think they know the answers. In fact, these are the traders who have answers that belong to the society and not themselves.

This is in fact a very broad topic and I can go on talking about it for a very long time. Unfortunately, there is not enough room here to discuss this in detail. Hence, if you are interested, make sure to get your copy of the 30 Days Trading Transformation program where you can learn much more about yourself.

Learning to Lead Yourself

Here are two independent activities that I would like you to take away today.

Learning to Lead

Some people call this “learning to learn” or even “learning to take control”. To a certain extend, this is a skill that you should learn to acquire.

But, just to be clear, we are not talking about leading other people, we are discussing about how you can learn to lead yourself.

Leading Yourself

There are three types of people in this world. Firstly, there are people who make things happen. Then there are people who watch things happen. Lastly, there are people who ask, what happened?

Which do you want to be?

I hope you are one of the first types. Because when a person truly understands his or her purpose and goals in life, they then have to learn to take charge of it. This is especially true in the trading world where the battle is between you and the market. No one else can influence your decision and no one can help you pull the trigger except you.

Remember that the market is a unique place and the fundamentals of trading do not change. So, the only thing that can or should change is YOU.

Conclusion

Can you see why leading yourself and your actions are important? Do you think you have what it takes to lead yourself from where you are now, to where you want to go?

If you truly want to succeed, then begin today by learning to lead yourself.

Thank you and have a good weekend.
